AvianGenomesWiki

This Wiki is primarily aimed at capturing resources and useful reference materials as they relate to the http://aviangenomes.org website. An avian-centered Wiki is being developed at Birdbase.net called the Aves_Wiki which is intended for broader avian biological science topics. We will strive to cross-link to relevant topics within the http://Birdbase.net (or direct link to Aves_Wiki) to ensure that information is readily available, but does not need to be duplicated.

Table of Contents

  1. Biological Topics
  2. Scientific Resources and Techniques
  3. About the Wiki

Biological Topics

This sub-section is intended for scientific learnings, or biological concepts important for interpreting experimental results.

  • VocalLearning -- an important driver for using songbirds as a model of vocal learning and speech recovery in humans.

Scientific Resources and Techniques

  • PathwayResources -- links to other pathway and gene network analysis resources
  • HandlingGenomeData -- tips, tricks, and strategies for handling genome data
  • MiscBixNotes -- collection of miscellaneous Bioinformatics notes, including things like how to download and install a particular tool, what parameters work or don't work for an analysis, or how to manage data into and out of different toolsets.
  • BioDrupal -- overview of BioDrupal, the strategy of employing Drupal for biological data analysis, and description of techniques employed to manage Drupal itself.

About the Wiki

The aviangenomes.org Wiki is intended to capture specific topics of interest for the avian scientific community, including:

  • Scientific theories, hypotheses, and findings
  • Links to relevant data analysis results and literature articles
  • Analytical and algorithmic approaches and when to apply them
  • Technical parameters used during analysis
  • Web sites, web tools, and databases recommended for the avian community

Open Invitation to Contribute

As with the Wiki philosophy, scientists are invited to participate, either by commenting on Wiki topics, or by contributing and editing topics directly. The system maintains revisions, so current and past content can be reviewed wherever desired.
Topics can be as simple as when to use a certain BLAST parameter, or as intricate as a debate about evolutionary constraints. However, the most detailed topics are still best placed in Wikipedia itself.

To Create a New Wiki Topic

  1. Click "Create Content" on the right side menu section.
  2. Select "Page" or "Wiki Page" as the content type.
  3. Create a page title with CamelCase (mixed capitals)

Link one topic to another

simply type the word in CamelCase and it will automatically be linked.

Statement of Success

The Wiki will be successful when it contains many very useful tips that help scientists' research.
